Consider Community Service Learning for Your Students

This year as your district starts implementing Ohio’s New Learning Standards—with their emphasis on applying classroom knowledge to real-world situations—keep in mind ODE’s Community Service Learning (CSL) Programs initiative, which provides ideas, information and tools for schools that want to help students apply their knowledge of classroom subjects to authentic community initiatives. CSL differs from traditional volunteerism or community service by also augmenting student learning. Current Ohio district CSL programs represent all academic subjects and occur at all grades. High school programs may even offer academic credit. Students involved in Community Service Learning often develop leadership and decision-making skills, learn about career options and expand their potential as community members.
