Registration is open through Nov. 30 for the eighth annual Poetry Out Loud poetry recitation contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation and administered statewide by the Ohio Arts Council. Local high schools will conduct their own competitions to select a student to represent them at the Ohio competition. The Ohio winner will advance to the national competition. Finalists for the national championship will compete for scholarship prizes totaling $50,000, with the national champion claiming $20,000 in scholarship funding.
Thirty Ohio schools already are registered and starting their quest for the Ohio Poetry Out Loud champion title. To get your students involved, familiarize yourself with the program on the www.poetryoutloud.org Teacher Resources Web page. Next, find the program in the Events tab of the Ohio Arts Council web site, www.oac.state.oh.us, and register. If you have questions, contact Pat Shannon, Ohio’s Poetry Out Loud Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org or (614) 728-4481. The registration deadline is November 30. There is no registration fee and all resource materials will be provided.
