Need help in measuring student growth with assessments?
Teachers as well as building and district leaders, particularly those implementing the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System this year, will benefit from new training and support related to selecting, developing and using assessments that can measure student growth. To get started in enhancing their “assessment literacy” skills, district and building teams should select a one-day training from the nearly 100 sessions that will be offered regionally throughout this school year by the department and Battelle for Kids. Training participants will then be eligible for professional development and technical assistance from an assessment literacy specialist assigned to their region. In addition, they will have access to a series of online learning support modules.
Registration is open for sessions that begin in September through your SAFE account by accessing STARS. Search for dates in your area using keywords: assessment literacy. Educational service centers, which will host most of the trainings, will be adding more dates soon.
Workkshop to provide guidance on interpreting teacher Value-Added Reports
Teacher leaders and school administrators supporting educators receiving Value-Added reports in grades 4-8 reading and math are invited to participate in a one-day regional workshop to lead and support the district-wide access, interpretation and analysis of SAS® Institute’s Education Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS)® reports. Fully understanding these reports will help pave the way to better utilization of Value-Added information.
These collaborative workshops are aimed at helping attendees understand Value-Added information, how to access, interpret and analyze Value-Added reports, and the connections between the roster verification and EVAAS reporting. They also will learn about a needs assessment for identifying what support various educators need. Finally, participations will develop a capacity-building plan for supporting school improvement at the local level (team, building and district).
Sign into your SAFE account to register in STARS for a workshop – several are scheduled beginning Sept. 27. Search with keyword Value-Added to find the sessions more easily. Registration is limited to 75 people per workshop.
Attend train-the-trainer sessions on student growth measures for your district
Administrators and teacher leaders who were unable to attend a training session on Student Growth Measures last winter are encouraged to register for a day-long session offered regionally. The department is offering 24 sessions of interest to participants at all grade levels. Many educational service centers are offering similar training for audiences associated with various grade levels or high school content.
A train-the trainer approach will be used so that district leaders can use the materials for professional development locally. Participants will learn how to identify and write high-quality student learning objectives; how to set growth targets and select assessments that will measure progress; and how to score student learning objectives. To register, access or create your SAFE account, open the STARS system and on the event search line, enter: SGM.
